Finding bait balls and the predators that follow them is the core skill of offshore trolling and open-water fishing. Sonar makes it systematic. Here's what bait and predators look like on the screen and how to position on them.

What Bait Balls Look Like on Sonar

A bait ball (a dense school of small fish like sardines, anchovies, or bunker) appears on 2D sonar as a dense, irregular cloud or blob of returns. Unlike individual fish arches, a bait ball is too dense to separate individual fish — the mass shows as a contiguous filled area. The density of the cloud (how bright and thick the returns are) gives a rough sense of the school's density.

Bait balls are usually in the top half of the water column — baitfish school in the upper layers where zooplankton is most concentrated. A typical bait ball appears in the top 30–50 feet of water, though it moves up and down based on light conditions and predator pressure.

Finding Predators Around Bait

When predators (tuna, mahi, wahoo, striped bass, bluefish) are actively feeding on a bait ball, the sonar picture changes distinctly. Individual arches appear below the bait ball — individual fish rising from depth into the school. The bait ball's shape fragments and compresses as it's chased tighter. When feeding is intense, the bait compresses to the surface (look for birds over the water) and the predator marks below.

Positioning on Moving Bait

Bait balls drift with current and wind. When you locate a ball with fish marks below, mark a waypoint and note the drift direction. Position the boat upcurrent of the ball — troll or drift into the fish rather than driving through and scattering them. Depends on species and conditions. Nearshore bait (bunker, mullet) typically shows in 0–40 ft. Offshore bait (sardines, anchovies for tuna) shows anywhere from surface to 300+ ft depending on oxygen and temperature layers. Bottom fish bait shows near the bottom at any depth. Look for the thermocline depth and search 20 ft above and below it for suspended bait.

How do I know if what I see is bait vs other debris?

Bait balls move — set a waypoint and watch if the cloud drifts with current or repositions. Debris drifts uniformly; a bait ball drifts but maintains its cloud shape and doesn't spread. Individual arches below or around the cloud = fish. Arches rising and falling into the cloud = active predators feeding.

Does rain or waves interfere with sonar when finding bait?
