Yes, but “actual fish” can mean four different things
No recreational fish finder shows a literal photographic fish through ordinary sonar. It shows echoes. The closest thing to watching an actual fish move is forward-facing live sonar, where targets update in near real time. An underwater camera can show the animal itself when visibility and positioning cooperate.
Traditional 2D sonar shows arches and lines. Down imaging shows small bright shapes and shadows. Fish ID turns selected returns into icons. Live sonar shows moving targets, but those targets still look like sonar returns rather than video.

Forward-facing live sonar is the closest sonar gets to live fish
Garmin LiveScope 2, Humminbird MEGA Live 2, and Lowrance ActiveTarget 2 XL are designed to show movement around the boat in real time. An angler can watch a fish approach a lure, turn away, rise, fall, or follow. This is fundamentally different from the scrolling history on traditional sonar.
The display still requires interpretation. A fish may be a bright moving shape, not a detailed silhouette. Distance, beam angle, target orientation, palette, and bottom clutter affect what you see. Fish near brush can merge with the structure. Fish outside the beam are invisible.

Fish ID icons are easy, but they are not proof
Fish ID examines sonar returns and labels some of them as fish. It may also estimate depth. That is useful for a beginner who is still learning arches, but the software cannot interview the target. Bubbles, small limbs, weeds, and concentrated bait can produce fish-like returns.
Use icons as training wheels. Run a split screen with raw sonar beside Fish ID when the unit allows it. Over time, compare the icons to the underlying marks. The goal is to understand why the software made its guess.
An underwater camera shows the actual animal, with conditions attached
A camera can reveal species, body shape, size class, color, behavior, and how fish relate to a lure. That makes it invaluable for ice fishing, clear-water scouting, docks, and checking a specific piece of structure. It can also prove that marks interpreted as fish are actually branches or bubbles.
The tradeoff is reach. Sonar can search a large cone or broad side-imaging swath without seeing through the water. A camera sees only where the lens points, and muddy water can reduce useful visibility to almost nothing. The best tools are complementary: sonar finds the target; a camera confirms it.
Which technology fits your fishing?
Bank fishing
A castable sonar is the practical starting point. It shows depth, bottom changes, vegetation, and likely fish returns without installing a transducer. It will not produce a television-like picture of fish.
Kayak fishing
A 5- to 9-inch traditional and imaging unit is usually more useful per dollar than live sonar. Add live sonar only when the kayak has adequate power, mounting space, and stability.
Bass and crappie from a boat
Forward-facing live sonar can directly affect how you present a lure to suspended fish and isolated cover. A large enough screen matters because target separation becomes harder when the view is squeezed.
Ice fishing
Live sonar and underwater cameras are both unusually effective because the boat is not moving and the hole provides a fixed reference point. The camera identifies fish; sonar covers more water and works in darkness or stained conditions.
Offshore fishing
Traditional CHIRP and properly selected transducers remain central. Live sonar has niche uses, but power, depth, beam coverage, and target detection beneath the vessel matter more than a fish-shaped icon.
What should a beginner buy first?
Start with a quality 2D CHIRP fish finder or chartplotter/sonar combo and learn range, gain, frequency, chart speed, and bottom interpretation. Add side imaging if you need to search away from the boat. Add live sonar after you can explain what your traditional unit is showing.
A screen that shows “actual fish” is only useful when you can position the transducer, understand the beam, and connect the image to the water in front of you. The electronics do not replace boat control. They make good boat control more productive.
