Sonar Technology Flasher Mode
Flasher mode is a display option on many fish finders that presents sonar data as a circular dial, mimicking the traditional standalone flasher units that ice anglers have used for decades. The dial represents depth from center to edge, and colored bands light up around the circle in real time to indicate the bottom, your lure, and any fish in the sonar cone.
Traditional ice flashers like Vexilar and MarCum units use this circular format exclusively. The real-time update speed — every ping instantly updates the display with no scrolling delay — makes flashers ideal for the vertical presentations used in ice fishing. You can watch your jig drop, see a fish rise toward it, and time your hookset based on the marks converging on the display.
Most major fish finder brands now include a flasher mode in their software. Humminbird, Garmin, and Lowrance units can all display their sonar data in this format, which is especially useful when you want to repurpose your summer boat unit for ice fishing rather than buying a dedicated flasher. Some models can be paired with portable power packs and ice transducers for a complete ice setup.
Flasher mode color coding follows industry convention. Red indicates a strong return, typically the bottom or a large fish. Orange and yellow show moderate returns like baitfish or your lure. Green indicates weak returns, often the edge of the sonar cone, light vegetation, or very small targets. Reading these colors fluently takes practice but becomes intuitive after a few trips on the ice.
