GPS Accuracy, WAAS & Why Waypoints Drift

GPS seems simple — it shows your position on a map. But GPS accuracy varies significantly based on satellite geometry, signal quality, and environmental factors. Understanding GPS accuracy helps you interpret waypoints, understand why waypoints "drift," and use WAAS to improve accuracy.

How GPS Position Is Determined

GPS receivers calculate position by measuring the time it takes for signals from multiple satellites to arrive. With three satellites, a 2D position (latitude and longitude) is possible. Four or more satellites add altitude and significantly improve accuracy. More satellites in favorable geometry = more accurate position.

Standard civilian GPS accuracy: 3–5 meters (10–16 feet) under open sky with a good signal. This is accurate enough to return to a waypoint you marked for a specific rock or stump. It's not accurate enough to precisely relocate a spot by the foot — two waypoints marked in the same place on different days will be within 3–10 meters of each other.

WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System)

WAAS is a US government GPS correction signal broadcast from geostationary satellites over the US that reduces position error from 3–5 meters to under 1 meter in most conditions. Most modern fish finders include WAAS-enabled GPS receivers. Enable WAAS in your unit's GPS settings if it's not on by default (it usually is).

Visible indicator: your unit will show "D" (differential) or "W" (WAAS) next to the GPS status indicator when WAAS corrections are being applied. Without WAAS correction active, precision drops to 3–5 meter range.

Why Waypoints Drift

You mark a waypoint in the same spot two months apart and they're 15 feet apart on the map. This is normal and has several causes: different satellite geometry on different days produces slightly different position errors; atmospheric conditions change GPS signal travel time; your fish finder antenna may have moved (mounting position changes the antenna phase center). For practical fishing purposes, returning to within 10 meters of a marked waypoint is functionally equivalent to being on the exact spot.

Does tree cover affect GPS accuracy?

Yes — dense tree canopy blocks satellite signals, reducing the number of usable satellites and degrading accuracy. In narrow river canyons or heavily wooded areas, GPS accuracy can degrade to 10–20 meters. Open water and open fields give the best GPS accuracy.
