Trolling motors run on either 24V (two batteries in series) or 36V (three batteries in series). The voltage determines thrust range, efficiency, and installation complexity. Here's what actually differs.
24V Trolling Motors
24V systems power motors in the 55–80 lb thrust range. Two Group 24 or Group 27 deep-cycle batteries wired in series create 24V. The motor draws approximately 40–50A at full thrust on a 24V system. Standard for most aluminum fishing boats, smaller bass boats, and boats where 80 lb thrust is sufficient for the size and typical conditions.
Wiring requirements: 6 AWG for runs under 15 ft; 4 AWG for longer runs or higher-thrust motors at the upper range. Two battery positions in the bow compartment or under bow decking.
The most popular 24V bow-mount — 80 lb thrust, Spot-Lock GPS, i-Pilot remote. Appropriate for most 17–21 ft bass and aluminum fishing boats.
36V Trolling Motors
36V systems power motors in the 80–112+ lb thrust range. Three batteries in series. Provides more thrust for larger or heavier boats, and at equivalent thrust levels, 36V is more efficient than 24V — the motor can produce the same thrust while drawing fewer amps, extending battery life. The trade-off: three battery positions required, more complex wiring, higher system weight.
36V is recommended for boats over 21 ft, heavy bass boats in wind, boats with large motors that tend to turn around on trolling motor power, and deep-water situations where maximum pulling power matters.
