Where you mount the transducer on a bass boat — on the transom or on the trolling motor shaft — affects sonar performance at speed, forward-facing sonar capability, and bow vs stern coverage. Here's the real comparison.

Transom Mount: The Standard

Transom-mounted transducers are the default for most fishing boats. They stay in a fixed position relative to the hull, can be angled and positioned optimally during installation, and in most installations provide excellent sonar at trolling and slow speeds. At high speed, transom mounts experience cavitation from prop wash — the degree depends on how well the transducer was positioned relative to the outboard turbulence.

Advantages: simplest installation, easy to adjust depth and angle, works at all frequencies and transducer types. Limitations: reads water at the stern of the boat (behind where you're fishing from), can fail at speed if in the turbulence zone.

Limitations: the transducer moves with the trolling motor's direction — pointing the motor sideways points the transducer sideways too, which is sometimes what you want (for side-angle live sonar views) and sometimes not.
