Mounting a transducer on a trolling motor shaft is the standard installation for forward-facing live sonar (LiveScope, MEGA Live) and provides a cleaner sonar image at the bow without a transom mount. Here's how it's done.
Why Trolling Motor Mount?
A trolling motor transducer mount keeps the transducer in the water even when the bow is raised during high-speed driving. It also positions the transducer at the bow, which is required for forward-facing sonar — the transducer needs to point forward from the boat's nose to image the water ahead. Transom-mounted transducers on the rear of the boat cannot provide forward view regardless of the sonar type.
Compatible Transducer Types
Different transducers mount differently on trolling motor shafts:
- Garmin Panoptix LiveScope (LVS32/LVS34): Mounts via a ball and socket bracket that clips around the trolling motor shaft — tool-free installation. The transducer can rotate to aim forward, down, or at any angle.
- Humminbird MEGA Live: Similar bracket-clamp system around the shaft, with a quick-release tab for rotation and removal.
- Standard transducer (for 2D or DI at bow): Aftermarket transducer arm mounts that clamp to the trolling motor shaft with a stainless steel clamp and adjustment arm.
Installation Steps
- Lower the trolling motor to determine where on the shaft to mount the bracket — transducer should be below the waterline at typical fishing depth, not just when the motor is at full depth.
- Wrap the shaft with non-slip material (most brackets include a rubber or foam wrap) to protect the motor shaft from the clamp.
- Attach the bracket clamp and tighten per manufacturer spec — hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a screwdriver is typically appropriate.
- Route the transducer cable up the shaft, securing with cable ties every 6–8 inches. Leave enough slack at the bottom for the transducer to swivel.
- Route the cable to the head unit, keeping it away from high-current wiring (trolling motor power cables) to reduce electrical interference.
- Test sonar in shallow water before committing — verify the transducer face is positioned parallel to the water surface (for down-imaging) or at the correct angle (for forward-facing live sonar).
