ActiveTarget is Lowrance's forward-facing live sonar system, currently in its second generation as ActiveTarget 2. It delivers real-time sonar imaging ahead of, below, and around the boat, competing directly with Garmin's LiveScope and Humminbird's MEGA Live in the rapidly expanding live sonar market. ActiveTarget requires a compatible Lowrance HDS PRO, HDS LIVE, or Elite FS display.
The system consists of a transducer that mounts to the trolling motor shaft and a processing module (black box) that connects to the display via Ethernet. ActiveTarget 2 offers three viewing modes: Forward mode scans ahead for fish and structure at casting distance, Down mode provides a real-time view directly below, and Scout mode offers a perspective-style wide-angle forward view.
A unique ActiveTarget 2 capability is Scout Wide mode, which pairs two AT2 transducers side by side to create a 180-degree forward-facing view. This dual-transducer setup covers significantly more water than a single unit, though it requires purchasing a second transducer and compatible mount hardware. This feature is exclusive to Lowrance and not available on competing systems.
ActiveTarget 2 is frequently praised for its deep water imaging performance, where some testers find it produces slightly clearer returns at depth compared to LiveScope. The system's refresh rate is smooth and fluid, fish movement appears natural on screen, and the black box architecture allows for future transducer upgrades without replacing the entire processing system. Lowrance's broader ecosystem includes MotorGuide trolling motor integration for coordinated boat positioning.
